Hi! Long time no see!

Post by kidcapri » Wed Apr 17, 2013 12:12 am

Haven't been around in ages and thanks to my brother I just recently decided to reinstall good ole UT99 along with 2004. Was rather shocked to see that CG and HOH are still alive and kicking. How have ya been there Herm? Seen any of the old crew pop up from time to time? Might have to see if I can drag ole Death Inc. out of him hole and get him to come play a few rounds. My brother said he has jumped on a few times (plays as whitekneegrow) and bumped into Skank. Hope everybody is doing good and hope to bump into a few of the old crew.

Oh yeah, very much alive and kicking!
Oh, and Redeemer Insanity is still up and going also. (The site and forum)

Wow, you finally remembered your P-word eh?
Awesome - yeah its been ages for you.

Oh yeah, we get some of the old guard back from time to time, and even more of that happening lately.
Some are still around but under different player names.

UT99 and Redeemer are coming back. (still going good)
Now STICK with it this time! :P

Glad to see you here again!!!

Indeed. We are all good and life is just rolling along as it should be. It is GREAT to hear from you. It has been a long time. It is moments like these where the folks from times past drop back in that make it so awesome here.

There is plenty of new folks but the old ones are always missed. I hope we get to frag each other soon. Take care!

Definitely good to be back! God at the endless hours I have thrown at this game over the years. Actually dug up an old computer and low and behold I found an old install of UT. Was hoping I could find my old server setup and all the files but I guess they have gotten lost between several moves and transitions to newer PCs over the years. Glad to see a few familar names on here. Probably jump on some this weekend and see if I can bring a few friends in tow with me. Nothing like swinging nuclear death around a corner and seeing the good ole MONSTER KILL flash on the screen :)

Take care guys and hope to bump into y'all soon!

Well I got bored last night and decided to see if I could remember how to throw a server back online. I had lost all my stuff for my old server so it was a start from scratch moment. After about 45 minutes of messing around I was able to get a stock server showing up in the master server list. Forgot just how fun it was to mess around with this stuff. I'm not trying to compete with Herm, Hook or anybody else that runs a server. It's more along the lines of just seeing if I could remember how to do all of that still and something to mess around with from time to time. Hard to believe when I did run a server a long time ago it ran on an old Pentium 2 with 64 meg of ram. Had to reboot it every other day because it kept running out of memory LMAO! Good times good times :)

If you try hard enough, you'll find the old server files. if not then build a new one if you like. Not even SRA or my place has the flat out advertising ability that HOOK has going on with Redeemer Server stuff. Now would be a great time to get it going again if you choose but be careful please not to start up just to shut back down soon after. I'd rather just see your name in the player list and the chat in the chat box. That is the single best thing any of us can do these days short of going all out towards a server.

I totally understand where you are coming from herm. I've got the server where it will show up in the master list and all but now it's a matter of messing around with all the files and compressing everything. If I'm gonna run a server I want to mod it out completely. Needless to say all that takes time which I know you know all about.

You or hook every mess around with custom music for the maps? I was fiddling around this evening with it and wanted to see if I could put a custom song on a map and talk about wanting to pull my hair out. I just grabbed a random MP3 out of my collection (happened to be an old Deftones song) and went to go converting it from MP3 to WAV to IT to UMX. Decided to use DM-Agony as my test subject. Could get the song to play but after 30 seconds it would start a 2nd version of the song so basically you would have the same song playing twice with one 30 seconds ahead of the other (hope that made sense). I have a feeling it has something to with the setup in modplug tracker. Read a tutorial or 10 and I'm guessing it has to do with patterns. Wish there was an easy way to go about setting the music up right and not having to jump through a 1000 hoops to get it somewhat working. If yall know of a program or utility let me know.

Progress!

Post by kidcapri » Fri Apr 26, 2013 7:12 pm

Sitting around waiting for my 12 year old daughter to make up her freaking mind what she wants to go eat I decided to take another stab at the music stuff. Picked a fresh song to try and went through all the steps again. MP3 to WAVE to IT to UMX. Changed out the music on a map, copied map and music file over to client to keep down the download times since I don't have the fast redirect set yet. Booted everything up and held my breath for 30 seconds....

Sucess!

Music worked flawless. Didn't let it play all the way out to see if it would restart at the end of the song but I can check that out after dinner tonight. All the million little things to go through and set. Feel like I need to set up a grocery list LOL! Got the milk, the eggs.....oh crap forgot the bread! Anyways time to go grab some grub. I'll keep yall posted on the progress as it moves along.

LOL. Awesome kid! It is OK if I call you that right?

The second I saw you were asking a question about sound and music stuff it me that you are going to enjoy a certain member we have here. His name is Dr. Flay and is likely the single greatest source for helpful information that I have ever come across in UT. While he doesn't know how to map like derdak2rot or Thunderbolt and while he doesn't know the inner workings of UT and mods like Helen or Kelly and while I don't think he is a long time server admin like HOOK and I and while he isn't the single greatest redeemer mod player ever like Mahatma he does bring home the bacon in UT information and suggestions like nobody I have ever seen before!

He is like a UT Genie. (Yes, I just coined that phrase and every cool variant you're thinking of now) I say that because if you say his name in a subject line of a new topic and if you make a request of him like "How do I convert my favorite mp3 into a UT UMX?" he will eventually (magically) appear with either the answer or one of the quickest paths towards the answer and additional insight or thoughts about your goal that even you might not have already considered.

Wow! I guess I didn't realize until right then how much I appreciate Dr. Flay and his efforts. Thanks Dr. Flay!

So there you have it Kid... ask for help as usual if you need it and if you need more information that you ever asked for then include Dr. Flay's name in the question to summon him. LOL! UT-Genie. I love it.

I just pushed this topic over at HOOK's too for maximum viewing:

Hey kid, when you get a chance be sure to register over there too. You won't regret it especially if you decide to really go after running a server again. The world is at your fingertips there much more than here. HOOK certainly has one of the top 5 best collections of UT enthusiast in the world and like on my forum they are all awesome and very well mannered.

That's Mr. Awesome to you herm LMAO! Naw you can call me whatever you would like. I've mellowed out over the past few years big time and not much bugs me these days.

Good to know there are still a good group of people around with knowledge of how all this stuff still works. I've been piddling with the music stuff some more when I'm not getting an earful of DADDY, DADDY, hey DADDY every few minutes from my kid. Had a moment or two of almost hair pulling out when I ran into some mismatch file stuff (I remember those being the things of nightmares back in the day) so another thing to add to the check list. I think I've got a good grasp on it for the moment tho. Got the arena mutator and an old version of mapvote 3.04 installed and they seem to run right. Also got at least one map with custom music running on it. Found out real quick if you want to run into all sorts of mismatch stuff just change the music out on a map and don't save it as a different name......BOOM! UT frowns on this I found out LOL! So if I have a server up and you see stock maps with some extra stuff on the name you will at least know what is going on. It's just a matter of doing a step or two then testing over and over. Plus I got to see if I can find some good maps to stick on there. There are a TON to dig around through. I downloaded about 12 maps last night to see about installing that I remember being pretty fun. Back to the grind. Thanks for the information Herm!

I err.. yeah. umm...
Just doin' my thang dude

"Jack-of-all-trades, master of none". That is what I am.

Having a geeky trick or two up my wizardy-digital-sleeve, and the curiosity of a monkey helps.

As it happens I recently re-visited the subject of UMX conversion, as all the tutorials I found are based on the same 2 out of date guides.
I used as modern software as possible, usable by all OSs, though you will still need the old Modplug Player, to "fix" the file before import into UEd.
This seems to be an issue with the newer ModPlugTracker.

I favour using real tracker mod files, as the file-sizes are more sensible. There are resources, tools and converted tracks (mp3 and tracker) that I like, including the one from the tutorial.

I highly recommend you find royalty-free music, remixes or mashups of the tracks you wish to use.

As it happens, I run a music label for free music. You can get permissions via me or direct contact with the producers.

Thanks for those link Dr.! I will have to take a look at all this and thanks for all the other info! Looks like I'll have some reading to check out this evening. I was able to take a handful of songs and get everything converted like it should and found an older version of modplug tracker which has seemed to help and actually act right. Set up 2 test maps and the music played great and didn't seem to have any issues.

LOL WOW herm I remember that! It's been a minute since I last saw that. Good times good times!

Has been a hell of a week this week. I managed to get one of the worst cases of pinkeye I think I've ever seen. Luckily it's on it's way out and I can actually see for a change. First time I've touched a computer in a week. Got some free time so I'm gonna try and work on it some this evening and tomorrow. Think I might have the redirect part under control so that's another thing to mess around and test.

Take care guys and thanks again for the info!
