UnrealGecko (GEx) says a hello!

Post by UnrealGecko » Mon Mar 31, 2014 5:08 am

Hi everybody! I had some trouble logging in, but Hermskii fixed the problems... Soooo... Here I am :P Some might know me from ut99.org or Hook's piratey galley.

I'm from Lithuania, almost 18 years old now. I started playing UT fairly recently actually, in about 2010 or so. So yeah, I'm still a n00b of sorts

Anyway, I'm very slowly building a couple of maps. I hope to finish them soon (though they're still barely started lol), because they're a bit of a pain to work out . I also have some experience with voicepacks, so if there's 1 in need send the samples to me and I'll check it out. Or if you already have one but it doesn't seem to work properly, I could try to fix the problem

All in all, not much about me yet... Hopefully I'll stop by the servers whenever I'll get my internet fixed. Now THAT'S a pain

Cheers!

Internet so bad you could consider as no internet  I can't open any page by any browser at all, can't download from ut servers the packages I might need, yet I can play in servers that I can join almost a.o.k, with barely any issues. Probably something as simple as the router being a tad bit too far or something.

Yes, I'm not sure what the problem was, but thanks again for fixing it. Hope to find some cool threads to post to
Thanks for the hellos!

Shht, I'll tell you a secret: I did not play UT since it was released. I noticed things later. Given the speed of your understanding and learning skill, I think you soon will be able to do cute things... Anyway, WELCOME!

See if my last post is of any use to you

Checklist

Is your router config page showing the external connection is slow ?
Check for MoBo chipset and network driver updates (the MoBo drivers should include your USB ports)
Make sure you are using the correct network driver.
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/pc-wizard.html (this will show you the chip info, rather than what driver is installed)
:!: USB transfers may be slow if you do not have the correct driver, and it often hammers the CPU interrupts. This slows everything while doing long data transfers.

Do you know if your neighbours have faster net ?
Make sure you are using a working filter in your phone socket, and there is no crackle and hiss when you pick up the phone.
Are you using Wi-fi or ethernet ?
Try a different ethernet cable, or even swap it around.
If you are using wi-fi, try and temporarily get Ethernet access to run tests.

You will need to tweak your network settings to match the real speed you can get.
Windows defaults are set for a network speed of up to 100 Mbits. This is often too high and chokes your connection with large data packets.

*EDIT*
I thought it made sense to add this info to the other post.

This might be the problem. Mind telling where can I change it? (sorry, but I still barely know anything about PCs, even if I have this PC for 7 years already :D). I use wi-fi... I think. Thanks for your help, I'll definetly check the links you posted. :)

The tweakers do the changes. Reboot to use the changes.

The BT tool is quick and does not offer many settings. You just choose which net device and hit next if you are happy with the default.
Run it a second time to undo the changes.
I usually try this 1 first.

The info shown on the http://www.speedguide.net/analyzer.php should tell you what it thinks you should do, by suggesting some recommended values.
Their optimiser tool has a slider you set to the speed you expect to get.
Image
It may be wise to set it low to 2 or 4 Mb.
Click on the "optimal" gadget to see the new settings.
The "MTU/Latency" tab will let you do some ping tests to see your average latency.
It also provides a calculator to use the info from tests.
You can use the tool and site to fine-tune with the custom mode.

NOTE TO EVERYONE: Modern OSs have something called "Nagle’s Algorithm".
This is supposed to combine small packets into bigger ones to send. It causes havoc with most games, and should be disabled.
SG TCP Optimizer has a section in the advanced tab. you can see if it is on or off. Using the "Optimal" setting will disable it for you.

The problem is, until you can use an ethernet cable to get setup first, all we are doing is testing your Wifi.
The windows tray icon is useless. If your Wifi has it's own GUI software, look to see if it shows 2 bars.
1 for signal strength, and the other for signal quality.
It is possible to have 100% signal and 50% quality (just like mobile phones).

LAN Lights is a nice small alternative to the windows tray icon, and will show lots of info.
http://www.paulmather.net
WiFi SiStr is a bit bigger, but very useful as it will show strength and quality, and also minimum and maximum speeds. Find it in the Freeware section at;
http://www.dnsoft.be
Xirrus WiFi Inspector hits every geeky button I have, and shows info in very easy to see graphs and charts (I think I may reinstall this now!).
http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Network- ... -Inspector
Fill out any old rubbish in the contact form, and then it gives you the file.
