Water/slime zone questions

Post by scrypt17 » Mon Nov 12, 2007 11:14 pm

1. I'm attempting to build an area with ankle/knee deep slime which does a small ammout of dammage continuously. ideally the players would fight flying monsters while trying to move from platform to platform. the entire floor would be usable and would not impede movement.. much.

i've been able to set the damage how i want it, unfortunatly damage is only given if i'm entirly submerged. when submerged jumping doesn't work and so the fight area is useless.

is it possible to create this scenerio or am i wasting my time?

2. are slith immune to slime damage? or is this somthing i would set under properties

3. can a water zone be set to inflict damage or am i better off using slime/lava zone and using a water texture?

4. some water area are very difficult to get out of. is there a scale i should use, such as one 16 grid block? or is it easier to put a ramp or stairs leading out of a water zone?

5. the wiki tutorial for water zone says 'use the exact size of the water zone you wish to create' however when i did this the whole room turned blue. instead i used a larger size then i needed and it seems to work fine, is there a problem with continuing like this.

Just make an invisible zone portal brush and place it above head level. Then simply poke a hole somewhere in the water zone portal to let the properties leak through to the invisible zone portal.
Adjust height so the invisible zone portal , when standing on the platform is under 96 units tall.
If you do this , standing on the platform you should be out of the water zone properties.
Move and test the height of the invisible portal. Keep it below players head and you should be good.

96 units tall is total height of player.
Hallways must also be at least this tall "with no room to jump"

Won't that also make a water zone to just above head level?
So you'll see the water up to there? (like a fog or when you are under water)

You can play with the height of the invisible zone portal.
Invisible being the key word here. you will only see the water on the water surface.
You will only feel the effects of the water if you fall off the platform and are submurged under the invisible portal.

* don't forget to get rid of the submerged gravity effects. You dont want to look like you are swimming if you are only knee deep in water.

Come to think of it you only need a regular zone info in there , with the health drain and the encroach sound configured.

so far no good. i created a decending room to test different lvls of water, the same problems occur. if i am deep enough to incur dammage i am unable to jump or move.

by leaking the water my whole lvl filled, so i may have to create a seperate zone for this room?

is there a way to make the floor do contact damage and just use the water for effect?

finally! after getting the damage to work on the pillars, not off, i got the invisible zone to work and i only recieve damage when off the pillar.

however now the character bounces like a heartbeat anywhere in the room wether taking damage or not. bounce is off but it is still doing it, any suggestion?

i used a regualr zone, and added damage, pain and damage.

Ok i just made a room with the description you posted.
Load it up in ED2 and look at how simple it is. look where i placed everything.

You only need one zone portal "this will be the water surface"

build the room and the pillars.
Go to the texture browser and select a good water texture.

To create the water surface you right click the create plane button.
Put in the dimentions you want.
Now hit build but dont add it to the world yet.
You just want the brush right now in the right shape.
Next you hit the special brush button and select waterzone.
Now hit ok.
Move the red builder brush away and you will see the green zone portal brush there.
In my example map i made the water height 32 units deep. with pilars that are 64 units tall.

Next go to the actor list and goto info>zoneinfo>lavazone

Place that actor in your level like i did under the water.
Remeber water must cover entire pit for water like perfect!!!!
If there is a hole in it somewhere the killzone properties will leak to above the water.
If you are dying when you are above the water then you have not sealed the pit , there is a leak or a hole somewhere.

I have made an example for you :called DM-Killzone test.unr

the link gives me a page of script and savetargetas is an html doc.

the dimentions you used, strangely enough, exactly the same as i used.

it seems that there was somthing wrong with my room to begin with, probably didn't set up the zones correctly. I started over from scrath and got it the first try. thats so much!

it now does exactly what i want, thanks again!

The zoneportal is just like a lid on a jar. If there is a hole the stuff inside "water properties " will escape.

I'm glad you got it going! Hope to see the final product soon. :D
