lighting skybox questions

Post by scrypt17 » Wed Feb 27, 2008 6:27 pm

I've created a large terrain area but i can't seem to get it lit. They sky box is working, so far as bright visible texture, but no ambient light is created. in other words, they sky is bright the lvl is pitch black. i could add hundreds of little lights to the lvl but each one looks very spotty at best leaving dark parts all over with the sun out. it looks terrible!

i've tried turing up the ambient light in the skybox zone info but that hasn't worked either.

how can i create a large lit area with out tons of little lights?

The Skybox will NOT light the map area!!!
You must light the map play area itself with its own lighting.
You can turn up the ambient light in the map area (not the skybox zone!!!)
I suggest NO more than 1 or 2 for ambient light in the map.
You can right click a 2d window to find the map properties.
The better way is to add lights to the map and up the light radius in the lighting properties of the light.
A light radius of 255 is maximum but it goes out quite a ways!
Duplicate the reset light as needed.
You shouldn't need "hundreds" LOL as you asked!

Yeah hook is right.

I use a small number in a big area. Each actor has a huge radius but a low brightness.
I tweak it till its perfect.
You don't want it overpowering your light sources.

But be aware of the shadows it may cast! Try to avoid.

i tried lights with maximum brightness and it would have still taken hundreds, i'll try increasing the radaii.

i added a zone-info and turned up the ambient light and it lit the whole area very well.

You don't need a zone-info to add ambient light.
Just add the ambient light in the MAP properties!
Right click a 2d window to find map properties.
Don't max-out the brightness either LOL.
Ambient light will light up everything but it is very UN-realistic!!!
Everywhere has the same lighting if you rely on ambient!
