You have stumbled upon one of the most troublesome, mysterious gremlins we had while making this version. The notorious 'freeze-crash'. :(

I could show you thread after thread in our dev section, of the amount of effort we went to trying to eliminate this bug. The problem was that it was not showing up for everyone, nor did it show up consistently (for all of us at least).

But we did try...., for example, here's a quote from our lead coder, way back when...

"Folks,

I have uplaod 6 different version of the ChaosUT.u files to help check out the mug freeze crashes: ..."

and I/we went on to test all of those different builds. We tried changing the effects. We even had a guy swapping out different hardware pieces and parts trying to nail it down.

Best we could say was that it seemed to be related / limited to lower end systems. (doesn't mean your system is, that's just the most reliable way we were able to repeat it.)

Bottom line is that it was worked on, and worked on, and worked on. But when you cannot repeat it in a reliable fashion, which we could not, despite all of our team and testers, it's nearly impossible to fix.

So I apologize for your trouble, and even though I HATE to make this suggestion, in this case it may be the best way to go... maybe use something like Stuffswapper to remove that weapon from your online experience. Esp if you are the main player on hte server, and you are the one crashing.

Sorry dude. Peace and Chaos.

I'm playing on an October 2002 purchased DELL 8200 with a 2.8 P4 and 1 Gig of dual channel RAM.
The vid card is an ATI 1650 PRO.

So if that is a relatively low end system for the mod, then that explains everything. :|

I appreciate the trouble you guys went through to try to find the root of the problem. The mod is otherwise totally awesome. :D

What is "Stuffswapper"?

If it's possible to just remove the freeze ammo and leave the flame ammo, that is ideal for me. I like to use alt fire with the MUG on DM-SpaceNoxx and blow the bots off the platform and into outer space. Once I set one on fire first, then pushed him off with alt fire. He left a cool smoke trail as he blazed a path through space.

That is just too cool Nameless. Too cool! LOL. Yes, Thanks R.Flagg for jumping and stopping the effort to try to fix it when it has already been tried. Hmmm? Now to just remove the freeze ammo.

At last I may have an insight as to what may be one of the factors involved in the game's lock up and crash of the PC. Every time UT2004 has locked up and crashed out my PC along with it, whether or not the freeze gun is involved, there has been an area of a bright light source of some kind that is being rendered on the monitor. My game just crashed 2 minutes ago. I was up high with the rail gun and looking down at a stationary bot that was shooting at another one that was off screen to the right and below. I alt fired my rail gun for the easy frag. I heard the sound effect of it firing. Then came the lockup where I am looking at a frozen moment of time, and the wham-wham-wham-wham sound of a lockup-crash. The whole monitor screen to the right and down towards where the unseen bot was standing was one huge streak of bright light.

I don't know if it had been firing the freeze gun or not. I think probably not. But I say again that there is always a bright light source involved during these crashes. I am wondering if the bright light of the freeze gun's icy cloud is the same sort of thing that is crashing my game. Could there be something in this that overwhelms a lesser system's video card and CPU?

Try turning off the dynamic lighting and try to turn off the coronas too and retry. Then if it still happens change your renderer and see if it still happens. Need help?

I unchecked both coronas and dynamic lighting under display preferences. I left the device renderer on the default D3D, although I am tempted to try Open_GL at some point.
I think it might have helped. I rushed a bot waving the freezing cloud around at one point, and did not lock up my game. So I'm going to experiment some more with that.

As far as the rendering goes, those two lighting effects must be subtle. I noticed only a small difference in the game appearance. Some of the shadows seemed darker, and perhaps some of the bright lights were a bit more blurred looking, but that is all.

Well I still have coronas and dynamic lighting turned off, but had a nasty crash anyhow tonight for the same reasons as always.
This is definitely an unsolved problem.
The moral of the story is, do not rush a bot trying to freeze you, get out of there as quick as you can and get beyond its range. Or you risk a nasty PC lockup.

Let's promise to meet up this weekend and let me see this in action. I should be able to force everyone to have this freeze gun and we can crash ourselves to oblivion!

Maybe tonight? I'm off tomorrow. I have a Knights of Columbus (which I'm proudly one of)meeting tonight and then nothing on the charts to do after I get home. Hopefully I won't be tired. Otherwise. Saturday night sounds good.
