This next one seems appropriate to the way things have been in Washington, in the years following his passing, and most especially this last year:
Don't join the book burners. Don't think you're going to conceal faults by concealing evidence that they ever existed. Don't be afraid to go in your library and read every book
-Dwight D. Eisenhower

Good advice in any election year:
To find a fault is easy; to do better may be difficult.
-Plutarch

Take any world event tragedy from the last 25 years and insert here: ___________________________________
I don't want to sound Pollyannaish, but I hope that out of a tragedy like this something good will come. I hope we understand we're one family.
-Madeleine Albright

This one fits nicely with the theme of the books I have been reading the most these last few years:
Develop interest in life as you see it; in people, things, literature, music - the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself.
-Henry Miller

People who reach the top of the tree are only those who haven't got the qualifications to detain them at the bottom.
-Peter Ustinov
Perhaps Mr. Ustinov was being facetious?
But on the other hand, it is often suggested these days that "success" should be measured in new ways. Certainly it is not how you do in life that is important, but rather how you live it.

I wonder who this guy was talking about?
He attacked everything in life with a mix of extraordinary genius and naive incompetence, and it was often difficult to tell which was which.

It can't be me, because I can only manage the latter of the two...... :?

Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.
-William Arthur Ward

Yes I agree. It is quite nice. One of the best I've ever found.

Check out the follow up to my previous post:

With this:
The world is moving so fast these days that the man who says it can't be done is generally interrupted by someone doing it.

Fully to understand a grand and beautiful thought requires, perhaps, as much time as to conceive it.
-Joseph Joubert
 Yes, it does. Frequently.
Have you ever observed that we pay much more attention to a wise passage when it is quoted than when we read it in the original author?
-Philip G. Hamerton,
Yes. And going by the length of this thread, I've got years and years of reading to do.

If I was going to close and lock this thread I think I would have ended it with this one, too.

"As their blood began to dry on the wall I sat down to think. I thought: They shouldn't said those mean things"

I don't know who wrote it but i saw it hand written on a wall when I was a teen. I liked it!

I remember Mahatma using that quote in one of his posts on the old forum. As an English teacher I bet he could tell us where that quote comes from.

I'd like to know the context of that quote, and what conclusions the character came to in the story.

A panel discussion on "political correctness" I watched on TV Ontario tonight defined the word bigotry as it relates to attitudes around this issue. It's been a while since I've even heard that word said on TV lately. Perhaps it's politically incorrect to use it nowadays?
It is not bigotry to be certain we are right; but it is bigotry to be unable to imagine how we might possibly have gone wrong.
-G. K. Chesterton

He who will not reason is a bigot; he who cannot is a fool; and he who dares not is a slave.

We've just watched the sad Republican convention last week, and now the same sad story is being repeated by the democrats. The politics of the day bring to mind:
Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.
-Plato
and:
I have long since come to believe that people never mean half of what they say, and that it is best to disregard their talk and judge only their actions.
-Dorothy Day
And just for fun:
For centuries, theologians have been explaining the unknowable in terms of the-not-worth-knowing.
-H. L. Mencken

Fit this last in with the others in any way you like.

The Paradoxical Commandments:
People are illogical, unreasonable, and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and frank anyway. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds. Think big anyway. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a few underdogs anyway. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight. Build anyway. People really need help but may attack you if you do help them. Help people anyway. Give the world the best you have and you'll get kicked in the teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
-Kent M. Keith

[Detractors] are just wrong, and that's okay. They just don't see it yet. That's what I would tell myself to keep those moments of doubt, only moments.
-Lisa Kudrow

The easiest thing in the world to be is you. The most difficult thing to be is what other people want you to be. Don't let them put you in that position.
-Leo Buscaglia
There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.
