David wrote:Since nameless was posting some videos of a "frenchy" vibe to it. I will post a song that is in French.

To be honest........ in the past when I have heard people speak French I have thought the language to be.... not that appealing. I guess from growing up, I had exposure to some people who were arrogant and thought too highly of themselves that spoke French.. so I related French to stuck up, snobby people. (US media does portrays this as well)

BUT, when I heard the following song, I thought that it was nicely done and that the language can also be beautiful. (When I said the last part of the sentence in my own head it makes me cringes some, not because of the value of what I said, ..... it just sounds woman like. hahaha) Enjoy.
Thanks for posting the video David, it's very nice. The girl's accent sounds truly French to this English speaker too, so if she is an Anglophone, then she worked hard at getting her pronunciations correct.

I have long thought of the French language as awkward. Just the way it is structured with its double negatives and things like that means that they have to say a lot more words just to get an idea across. (English is better, but not the best at getting the point across in the fewest words, imo)
However when you listen to it in music, you can hear how they get around this, or use the languages quirks to sonic advantage.
English is a Germanic based language, so it is only second to German as the harshest sounding and hardest to make sound beautiful in song. -Perhaps the Norman invasion of 1066 with the resulting heavy overlay of French words into the English language is what saves us from sounding the worst in song.

Interestingly, the French language has a literary tense, which is used only for the written word. It is said that this written language is one of the most beautiful in the world.
My father could speak French quite fluently, and had a book written in that style of French, which he enjoyed reading and studying. I hope I still have it here someplace.

Studying French was required when I was in high school, since it is our other legal language up here. By memorizing the vocabulary and drilling myself on the lessons a lot, and with the help of my Dad I was able to get good marks. It's been 43 years since I last studied though, so I often recognize many of the words in these videos but can no longer remember what they mean.

Here is another video of that first song I posted. And it's an actual video. Dang, I grew up in the '60's and don't recall seeing very many videos by English speaking singers. What was wrong with the networks and record companies? Geez, we missed out on a lot.

And now a nice slide show of photos of Francoise Hardy, as you read a translation of the lyrics. ;)

As to the snob thing, it's true. The French language was popular in Europe (including Russia) for a time as the language of court of pretty much every kingdom. So snobs to this day use French as a way of socially elevating themselves. Although if they went to France and tried to get by, they'd be laughed out of town with their horrible mangling of the language.
The flipside too, is that a lot of Frenchmen think of their country as being #1 in all things, and get under people's skin accordingly.

***************
p.s. I have a couple of nit picks with the English translation:

1) l'ame en peine actually means word for word "soul in pain". I think soul in pain is fine, or one could say heartache instead. (But according to Bing Translator, "heartache" translates as "chagrin d'amour".)
So I would go with " my soul in pain", as the translation of that phrase. I think it works better than "a lost soul".

2) the French word ennuie can mean boredom, but it could also mean "all the cares in life that get you down". So I would substitute the word "sadness" for boredom.

When used as a verb the French word can also mean to miss something, so I'm wracking my brain trying to think of an English word that suggests both boredom and a sadness due to missing love. Hmmmmmmm.............

 :)

Why is there a picture of Jedi tree rats on the cover, when it's a video about Jedi Chipmunks?

Sorry, but I like the video of the Jedi Kitten "The Force Awakens" that comes up afterwards, better. ;)

Just think, if I had not gone to this fellow's blog that I visit once or twice a year, I would never have known of this marvelous French singer. I'm going to lay one more video of hers on you, because this one is the best song of hers I've heard so far. It was her second recording, and this is her first video. She did the videos for her first recording later on.

I just love her diction, her pure and true pronunciation of the French language. How I wish my French teachers had used her music to inspire us in class. Those recordings that we did hear back then were so old fashioned that we laughed at them. This work was contemporary to us, and I'm sure we would have liked it a lot.

Here is the best English translation I could find that stays true to the actual words:

It is the time of love,
the time of friends and adventure.
As the time comes and goes,
one thinks of nothing in spite of one's wounds.
Because the time of love
it's long and it's short,
it lasts forever, one remembers it all.

At twenty, we tell ourselves that we rule the world,
and that all the blue sky will be in our eyes forever.

It is the time of love,
the time of friends and adventure.
As the time comes and goes,
We think of nothing in spite of our wounds.
For the time of love
it fills your heart
with so much warmth and happiness.

One fine day it's love and the heart beats faster,
for life follows its course
and one is totally happy to be in love.

It is the time of love,
the time of friends and adventure.
When the time comes and goes,
one thinks of nothing in spite of one's wounds.
For the time of love
it's long and it's short,
it lasts forever, one remembers it all.

I'm a man........but I can change........if I have to........I guess
