Router Configuration

Post by Hermskii » Thu Apr 23, 2009 1:41 pm

Hey folks, I came across this place today:

http://portforward.com/english/applicat ... tindex.htm

What it is, is a website that has created a way for people who can't really do the technical stuff on their own when it comes to setting up a router in order to run a UT server.

How it works: They have a webpage that list all of the games that they have made an easy way to open ports for them through a router. So all you have to do is pick the game you want to serve. I had already chosen Unreal Tournament and it then took me to the link that I posted above.

Then all you have to do is click on the type of router you want that game to be able to have open ports on meaning to pick your router from the list.

That was a s far as I went since my ports are already open and I don't need this. It then takes you to a page where I suspect it as a few more questions about username, passwords and then it automatically makes the changes for you.

It is a great idea I think though I did not agree with all of the ports they say would need to be open for UT. Still, it may be an easy way to get it done for several of you and especially for those of you that have routers I know nothing about. PEACE!

Hermskii, I went to that site when I was having problems getting my Server to show up out on the net.
I too didn't agree with some ports LOL.
They didn't have my router there, so I was out of luck. :(
But, for the most part, many people do have great results with portforward.com !
I may have had good results too but at the time I didn't actually know what the problem really was.
I used your manual as a guide on the final try.
OK - I checked the site and they have my router now.
The ports they say are pretty vague - you have to know which "REAL" ports you need to open.
They "Assume" a lot there. :|
One GOOD thing there is they show you HOW to do it though. :P
But, I myself had to turn OFF attack detection in the router to get it all to work.
That is something they don't tell you.
No one but No one knew this except ONE tech at my ISP.
ANd believe me - I checked everywhere about my problem with my router.

PS: The site does not do it for you - you have to BUY the software to do it on your own comp.
To find the results, you click on the bypass the ad link in the upper right corner of the ad screen for the software they sell.
Then it shows you what to do, but YOU have to do it on your own router AND - with YOUR OWN ports that you choose to use if you alter any such as using 8888 or 8080 or 7777 or 7757, etc.

All in All, I think your UT Manual says it better. (At least for UT)
That reminds me - I need to post that NEW Updated info on this - remember Hermskii?
I gots to put the final touches on it!

wait are you guys rewriting the ut manual? sweet post a link id like to see it when its written.
When was the last time that thing was updated?

i never really have trusted sites like these, i guess im pretty biased about it, but i like to know that im doing it correctly. But this is still pretty interesting i just wrote a quick Tutorial on hooks for portforwarding because a couple of the members wanted to know how.

I might have to pass this link on.....

What many "helpful" sites fail to mention too, is that you need to give your workstation a static IP address.
Don't forget your other TCP/IP settings.
Gateway = your router address (generally 192.168.2.1)
I did port forwarding tonight and now,

I GET KILLED FASTER AND LOSE GAMES FASTER WITHOUT THAT ANNOYING LAG!!

SOME routers do this for you so to speak.
My router assigns my computer the same IP if you port forward to a certain IP.
It is pretty neat.
Or it will also port forward to a "named" computer on our home network no matter what IP it is assigned.
If the IP assigned to that computer changes - it does not matter it will port forward to that comp.

Oh - BiGbOsS - Yes, we updated Hermskii's UT Manual a bit.
I gotta find time to go back and finalize it one of these days.
I got SOOO many sticks in the fire.
