Cache question
My internet has been a major issue within the last couple days. Anyways, I was playing at Fuzz_Balls place and my UT crashed three times during games. This is not normal.
WarMaster told me if I have too much cache files, that could cause a problem. I tried to look into it on the internet, but it would not work at the time. So I deleted the cache files.
In the unrealtournament folder alone, there were 6781 cache files. In the cache folder in the unrealtournament folder there were another 2039 cache files.
My Unrealtournament before deleting the cache files was over 10 gigs. Now after deleting the cache files it went down around 2 gigs.
Was this a good move on my part or not?

Re: Cache question
Not bad, there is a number of files in a folder which can be well handled by operating system, too many files will just cause troubles and slow down disk acces. You never need those TMP files. They are created at decompressing files downloaded from servers where you played. Usually I keep cache and I remove TMPs. They are just wasting space for nothing.
Also can be better if you pick a day on each week for a scandisk. Keep in mind, any TMP files is just a temporary file, you don't need it any more at next computer start. I don't see any reason to keep them in root folder, also for Temporary Internet Files, but that is another chapter not this subject.
A normal good server will send you again files required for play, usually is redirecting you for a better speed of download - if the server is setup correctly and redirect is faster - if not, server is send you files anyway but at slow speed (game speed 20kb/s max) this is not what players wants, will be better to keep files in cache to avoid mismatches. Next time remove TMP files and keep cache content. Remove it only if is too big.

Re: Cache question
It is always OK to delete your entire cache folder from your c:\UnrealTournamnet folder. Nuke all of those temp files too. Next time you join a server it will check to see what you have and it will send what you don't have. Great answers here folks!

Re: Cache question
Yes, I agree.
I first look at my cache to see if there are any good files I want to keep.
I convert those "keepers" and file them into the correct UT folders or store them.
I then nuke all the rest and nuke all the temp files too.
I do this 1 or 2 times a week.
Depends on how much you play and how much you DownLoad.

Re: Cache question
I don't keep any of it. I nuke all of the temps and the cache folder. I install UT all of the time so it doesn't matter to me.

Re: Cache question
Cache files are rotated and dont really have much life on the client. Ill play on my own server for a month and suddenly its redownloading the MH mod, nexgen, and maps ive recently played all over again. Its a good way to keep things fresh across the server and clients. So I say if you are having issues with stability, Nuke all the files in the cache and let it rebuild.
Also - wanted to add:
If you play regularly on a few servers the cache shouldnt grow as quickly. If you server hop on many servers over the period of years (like Ive done)... yeah 10+ gigs in cache files alone is not impossible to achieve, lol

Re: Cache question
Just an FYI here...
You can Set how long your cache keeps files.
In your UnrealTournament.ini file - open it and find this section near the top...
[Core.System]
PurgeCacheDays=30 <- here
Set it to how many days you want to keep these files then save and close the ini file.
You will still need to delete your "tmp" temporary files in your UT/System folder though.

Re: Cache question
By default I think it is set to 30. I change mine to 9999. I actually don't even change it anymore because I'm so fast at reinstalling a full version of UT even with the S3TC textures. I think I can do the whole install in 5 minutes at this point.

Re: Cache question
When I looked at mine, it was set to 0. So it did not delete cache. I changed it to 30.

Re: Cache question
Right, if you have 0 value will be there forever not 9999. Default value is 30 (maybe for avoid wasting space) remember first days of UT and computers used. Were not like in our days with more Gb space. I personally have 0 at Purge... When I see HDD space decreased, I know where is the problem and I delete files from cache. Sometimes cache is usefull for a fast contact to a server. If 6 of 8 files are in cache, you have to downlod only 2 of them and then enter in game. Keeping files in cache will never be a problem with mismatches. About TMP files, I always delete them, nobody and nothing will cry for them.
