ut99 mapping contest

Post by EvilGrins » Fri Aug 11, 2017 5:22 pm

UT99.org has a discussion thread up for an end of the year mapping contest · https://ut99.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=12318

So there should be a bunch of new maps as we're coming into 2018.

Finally Chaos is the theme so there will be a new bunch of map suitable for ChaosUT servers.
If only we knew of someone nearby that hosts Chaos :wink:

Aside information:
I'm not sure if I'm interested too much about this contest (even if I was bumping old contest thread). Excuse me for presenting reason/s.

I was browsing UT servers using "new methods" for custom game-types. I found 2 Chaos servers. What were you saying ? Right now we start a mapping contest for 2 servers ? Wow ! Impressive... Do these admins know about contest ? You should tell them - make them happy.

How about starting a MH mapping contest for my personal server - here because at UT99.org is not such an intensive interest for MonsterHunt - or something more easy, a FIXING-MH-MAPS Contest ? simply fixing trash stuff already done. Anyone participating ? No one ? Good, no problems, I can do maps for myself as I could see so far... and without restrictions from any kind... so I'm spending time together with "friend" Edy (Editor) because is a bit productive. Buttons which I did seems to help at fixing bad content - I'm feeling good right now, even if I had a surgery in April, new good things are giving you power like steroids (XCGE, MapGarbage Editor tool, Buttons, small mutators testers, etc.).

Best regards to all participants excepting... exceptions.

I don't know how many times I explained it but, 1 more go...
Chaos maps do not need a custom game type and can run on any UT99 server, just like any other map with custom resources.
All you need is the textures, sounds and decos, just like normal.

The only thing that will limit a map to only being on a Chaos server, is if people add actors from the mod (which they have been told not to do).
Chaos weapons and relics can be added to any non-Chaos map if you use the mutator.

The maps are being made with the Chaos theme. Nothing more.
The whole lot will run on a non-Chaos server.

I've installed some maps. More of them have items (swords, mines, etc). I though that they are replaced but I see devs used in mapping directly - so these maps even if are played in default DM are still requiring the most of files from Chaos :| .
Not to forget that they spread errors which I worked for removing. THIS style is not for me, I'm not gonna replace old errors with new ones...

I'm all ears for a new MH- Competition. :D So, why not both!

I'm still writing a tutorial for all people, in pdf format. :mrgreen:

Monster Hunt seems more debated here then anywhere - or I'm wrong :?: . Probably THIS is the place for something like a competition for some MH spree (fixing, mapping, new MH stuff, and so on...).
Preferred actions:
- no name maps or noob maps - total attack - reworking stuff, triggers, settings, Bot action where is possible;
- new maps;
- template maps - for whoever wants to do some different stunts around an idea.

Other hints ?

As a matter of fact I've done a macro importer txt file for custom simple textures (PCX 8 Bit) having 485 lines and around 50kb of text. I'm still looking through textures which I have for adding more if are nice.
Purpose:
A map having some new textures perhaps is not productive if it comes out with 500 MB of UTX dependent files because of 20 walls using a few textures from a mountain of MB. Else content of custom UTX might be borked - depending on author who did it. By Exporting and Re-importing they are a bit filtered - bad blocks are skipped - and I know UTX files which are even crashing Editor - I will never use those things in their original format...
At this moment I have some Level as work in progress with new textures where I want to drop more MyLevel which I was doing last time. For sure it won't go at ut99.org because there people are busy with other stuff and is not nice and neither polite to ruin their happiness... because this map will go smaller than 4096 UU because... is a lot of place after all...

While Idid not understand most of that I do know that we used to be the place for MH stuff. My servers have been offline for a long time now but I suspect I will have them all back up inside of 30 days. I always hoped to get back to UT and my oldest might be even more reason to do so. MH is a passion of his too.

We might come back to life around here.

ABout the contest being for CHAOS maps, that is awesome too. My 2 Chaos servers will be up and running again.
~Peace~

All right, I'll check out other tutorials what they say (about geometry mainly) the rest of scripting is not a big deal.
I might be having some inspiration for some MH Level with a bit of customization. My daughter was giving me some hints (these kids...). Stuff won't include any content coming from "mods"... but something having a bit of MH game-play. I'm hoping to not fail because of Goblin...

Though you don't need to have the ChaosUT mutator to play them, you may need to download the mod as most of the maps use elements that can only be found in it.
