The plot thickens. I love it. There might be light at the end of the tunnel, or maybe just another Skaarj.

 Could be worse... a warlord! OUCH!! :!:

Well, got my hopes up a bit anyways. Just didn't want to see all that good stuff he had on there just vanish into thin air. :(

Cross your fingers...

Cross your fingers...

I have baited the 3 pronged trouble hook and have cast it deep into the belly of the beast. Into the belly of the one they call Skillz.

I'm slowly reeling in and watching the tip of my fishing rod for any sign of interest from this prey. The slightest dip in the pole and I will jerk back so hard that the pole may crack. Yes, he may get away but never without a reminder in his gut.

OK, enough of the fishing analogy:

Skillz was sorry that he had to drop his website so fast and feels he should have warned everyone first but didn't have the time. Money just got too tight and he had to put family first. He knows it hurt many people and he is sorry for that but his family comes first as does mine so I totally know what he's going through. I too have come close to shutting down before. He doesn't even have an internet connection at his own house right now. I hope that gives some of you an idea of how quickly it got tight around him money-wise. I hope it doesn't happen to me too someday but it might. He made the right decision and I will too when the day comes.

Anyways, I have offered him a new home for his web stuff right here at HOH. There is a good chance that my servers aren't good enough or that I can't provide the bandwidth that he has told me he needs monthly in order to run his show. I may not even come close to having enough space for him to live here at all. I have asked him to double check his numbers and get back with me becasue so far it doesn't seem that I'd be able to house all of his stuff.

I stressed what an honor it would be for me to host his website and ride on the coat-tail of his MH success. I expressed that I didn't expect him to take me up on the offer but wanted to be clear that I made it. Note that I doubt that I would make this offer to anyone else. I really respect what he has been able to do for MH and I just want to help him continue his efforts.

I'll let you folks know how the negotiations proceed as I find out myself. That is all. Later!

That's all we could ask & hope for... even if it's not including the files (I'm sure was the biggest part of the bandwidth in downloads), but just the informative forum part itself would be good enough.

This is the main reason for my sadness. I used the site as a major resource when mapping.

If we could just get a mapping section here and some of those mappers to hang out , i would be TOTALLY satisfied.

More

Post by Hermskii » Wed Oct 03, 2007 11:02 pm

I talked more with him today. The fall of his website was a lot harder on him than I thought originally. He really gave it his all to keep it going but needed more help, more money, more regulars and more time. None really came to pass for sustained periods of time so he really had to shut down just like a business with lots of employees and no business to support them.

I have asked him to relaunch his back-up of his forum here from my webserver at my cost. I can't even come close to the bandwidth he would need to support the files, logs and stats he kept for years. He knows this too. He movers over 2000 times more info from his server than Ido from here. Most was maps naturally. I can't hold the maps or any of that stuff as I mentioned.

I don't even know if it is possible to do what he and I are talking about but if he wants to try it, I'm game. I expect a final answer from him in a few days at least. He knows that he can use my space for free until he gets back on his feet and then he can simply migrate it right back to wherever he wants his stuff to be. I argued that I felt his forum was his most important thing on the site and not the maps. we'll see what he says. Later!

This is not good news. The site of Skillz host some good mh map. Someone at the SMo community ask for place to download map but smiling-monsters.com does not have the room that they need. So I decide to add monsterhunt map to filefront. This way some map will not be lost.

Good work

Good work there The_Watcher. I guess I never did get back to everyone about this. Well, as expected Skillz said no. I offered to at least host his forum but he felt it wasn't ever used anyways so still said no. Yes, I already argued with him about it. I'm sure when his finacial tide changes we'll see something of his awesome website again. It also turned out that I didn't have even half a chance to maintain the bandwidth that he would have needed. So not only was it no, it was not possible basically. Sorry for the late update. Skillz is still one very classy act to follow in my book.

That's the confusing thing though, it was being used (maybe not daily, but still used nonetheless). So if there was some trouble, why was there a sudden pull of it then? Is also his other sites down also?

There was allot of traffic but. . . it was mostly people who would Download files but not donate any money. Skillz was floating this bill himself.
I did the same to my old forum/website and server. Do you remember a server called MerypoppinsPandaClan? Let her rest in piece. She was a good girl. 8)

Yes

Post by Hermskii » Sun Oct 21, 2007 10:47 pm

Yes, he was dumping more than $200 a month into his website and got no help basically. I spend about $8 a month here. Easy for me. I would not have a chance to blow the bucks he did.

I really doubt i will be joining another forum any time soon.
But it is really good to know you are knowledgeable on the subject.
I would really just love 1 forum tab for mapping. It would encourage more players to start mapping and more MH maps to be produced. It would also be a great resource for sharing info between current mappers like ourselves.
