What should number 10 be?

Post by Hermskii » Tue Dec 16, 2008 10:36 am

I have decided to grow the "How To" section of the website. Rather than have one all encompassing manual as I have now, I will offer several solutions written the way that they have worked for me. That doesn't make them right or better but I think I write stuff in a way that is easier for newbs to understand and that makes them more willing to try to do stuff for themselves. I have made a short list of things I want to do first. Several of these are already covered in my How To Set Up A Player / UT Server guide and I will likely simply cut them out and post them seperately. I made it up to 9 and got stuck. I'll list them here and you folks tell me what you want #10 to be and any additional tutorials to be. Here is my current list:

1. How to set up a Player installation
2. How to set up a UT Server from home
3. How to set up a TestPlayer installation
4. How to use the OpenGL Renderer
5. How to use the S3TC textures
6. How to set up and use redirects
7. How to fix UT speeding up and slowing down
8. How to set your MapVote hot-key
9. How to use UTCheck
10. ???

You should group all the server stuff together.
And you should not have the s3c textures any where near the server stuff.
Because someone is going to be stupid and use them in a server.

Put the ''ini. & u.'' files into your System
Put the ''unr.'' files into your Maps
Put the ''utx.'' files into your Textures
Put the ''uax.'' files into your Sounds
Put the ''umx.'' files into your Music

I think #8 shouldn't be just to mapvote a hot-key, but to hot-key anything worth needed to a player.

Also if made, there should be a beginners to advanced stages.

Very good HellFire. How about .jpg and txt files? How about the HTML? These often come with maps. I know the answer. I just want to see if you folks do.

Those files are what Hellfire just said, but I think they have to be placed on the Help directory... right?

Don't forget useful console commands and keybindings.

[Edit]

...and also tweaking your UT.

Sounds like a good idea, scify's idea is a common problem around beginners, and i often get questions about that on servers. I also like this one too

How to beat the MEAT

Actually that should be #1.

Maybe #10 could be Troubleshooting.
Maybe a listing of things that usually go wrong and possible solutions.
Or #10 could be Downloads.
Maps, mods, patches, server tools, how to use console commands...etc

Here are some examples:

- I can't use my Searchlight/Flashlight and I don't know why.
Re: check if your Dynamic Lighting (Video settings) is enabled.

- I saw people doing flips during on-line games, they told me to quickly double-tap my movement keys but I still can't do that thing.
