Windows Vista

Post by Hermskii » Tue Apr 15, 2008 11:15 pm

Anybody running this new OS yet? Any thoughts about it? Yes, Matrix, I know you have it already on your laptop.

I ask because I just upgraded from XP to Business Class Vista. Downloading updates as I type this from my laptop. I was just wondering what you folks might think so far about it. CYA!

Hmmm

Post by Hermskii » Wed Apr 16, 2008 10:45 pm

Hmmm. I ran the advisor before I upgraded to it. It told me I would be OK. I installed it and now it tells me "hell no" to my old web cam. That is OK to me because it is old. I already have a newer one to use that I'll pull off my PC in the garage.

UT runs like crap on my PC because I only have 1gb of ram. Bummer! I will add more ram. My fps are less and my sound is whacked. All due to the ram I hope. Other than that, I love Vista. Lots off new stuff in it and it looks pretty cool. This is certainly Microsoft's closest hit to looking like mac and being stable as hell.

More later maybe. CYA.

Weird, my son has a new laptop we loaded UT on and it runs Great!
He has Vista Home basic.
So far Vista seems to be slow running and hoggy!
He is OK with it.
UT runs awesome on it though - I don't remember if he has 1 or 2 gigs of ram though. :?
UT runs great (even at high res 1240 x something) on my old comp and i only have 128mb ram on it LOL
You probably just need to tweak something.

Ready Boost

Post by Hermskii » Sun Apr 20, 2008 11:04 pm

Check this out. My rig only has 1gb of ram. Vista likes much more. I did not know this but with a newer and tested and proven version of certain flash drives and camera memory sticks, you can add to Vista memeory to make it run better by simply plugging in a jump drive/flash drive. That is cool. I also learned that not all jump drives are the same. I always thought it only mattered whether they were USB1 or USB2 but apparently, Vista takes it to a whole new level where you have to have one that can read and write at certain speeds or it will get failed and will not be allowed to be added as system memory when you plug it up.

All 3 of my jump drives failed. I will by a new one though since it will work anywhere unlike new system memory built specifically for my computer. Good idea there Microsoft.

Is that like using a flash drive as a paging file? i was planning on doin that with my pc (XP SP2) can improve performance as theres less strain on the HDD but i found another method by setting the paging file too only kick in once ram is nearly all used up. its improved start up and shut down time alot and opening programs.

ok

Post by Hermskii » Mon Apr 21, 2008 9:40 pm

Just a update. I have added a 8gb approved windows Ready Boost ram drive to my system. If anything, my system is slower. I ran Mad Onion 2001SE and got a high 9,000 score. On this old rig, I normally get about 15,000 with Windows XP.

I still like Vista cause I know that PC's will continue to get better and so will Vista over time. I'm on a 333mhz FSB computer with 1/2 the suggested minimum ram. I've seen Vista on new machines with fast processors and front side buses and they ran pretty good I thought.

My computer is old. What can I say. All I need it to do is play UT and it does that! I'll keep her a few more years I think.

Vista has some problems that slow up SOME things but it runs software fast.
They'll tweak it pretty soon and have the usual updates.
My son has already done some tweaks he found that have really helped quite a bit.
