Installing these old games on new computers...

Post by Hermskii » Wed Dec 18, 2024 4:30 am

I have had the same old laptop for 9-years now. It still works just fine "basically" but like me it is older and slower than desired. I have had both UT99 and UT2004 installed on it since I got it. I finally got myself a new laptop recently and have been doing everything I can to ensure it is able do everything the old one does. Naturally, that includes installing and running UT99 and UT2004. I'm on the new laptop right now. My how things have changed over the years. I wanted to create this topic to help me and any of us who have to go through this which should eventually be all of us. I want to make a checklist of sorts to track this. Here is what I can recall so far and I'm hoping to hear from anyone who has a better way.

UT99 on Windows 10:

Install the virgin install of UT99. (Good luck as most laptops don't have CD-ROMs anymore)
Run the UT 436NoDeltaPatch. (I think there is a newer/better updated patch available)
Install the original UT Bonus Packs #1, #3 and #4. (Do not install Bonus Pack #2)
Install the latest XBrowser mod which right now is 2.0.1
Install UTCheck
Install ArenaMatch121 mod
Install MonsterHunt mod. (This is going to be a major decision as there are many versions available now)
Install an updated video renderer like UTGLR37 renderer or Direct3D 10 renderer (This will be required to view the game properly on wide screens and have the game appear to run at proper speed and again, there are many available options)

UT2004 on Windows 10:

Install the virgin install of UT2004. (Good luck as most laptops don't have CD-ROMs anymore)
Install the Epic Editor's Choice Edition (ECE) Bonus Pack
Install the latest Game Patch which I think is Unreal Tournament 2004 Patch 3369 (Patch 7) (Note that there is discussion about a 64-bit version of this which is better)
Install the UT2004 WIN64 3369 Patch which I guess updates the basic 3369.
I got tired so this is all for now, but I will try to modify this top post as I get good info below to update it with.
~Peace~

I decided to stick to the same old... I keep running Windows 7...
I shed a tear & two when I managed to install Windows 7 inside my 7 or so year old laptop (so many sevens... :P)
I had it installed previously in a computer case, it a dual core Core2 Duo, the only old things from it from a quick glance. The graphics is a 1030 GTX, the only single-slot card, I think they've gone extinct now, at least the good ones, this one is good!
With that I get enough room to install an additional X-fi sound card or any sound card... As long as it outputs 192000 Hz in high fidelity, hehe but I can dream if old hardware was not meant to do that
But back to my main laptop, It feels like I replaced the old case, this laptop plows like a freight train! Solid stability, rock hard efficiency. It has never crashed UT on me
I remember installing Windows 8 on this same computer, but UT choked all the way all the time, it might be some DirectX incompatibility (DirectX can mean Video, Input, Sound) any of those can go wrong after an update.
Which is why I strongly hold my position here. Even if availability of hardware becomes an issue in the future, or if my computer ends up burning up from age
Last thing that broke to me was an LG 5:4 LCD, it had great visuals, and the vertical space given at any time leaves me in awe - as you go widescreen or wider, the vertical spaces get cut out. UT cuts out vertical space as you go wider. You may always adjust Field Of View to compensate loss of vertical space
Currently I use an AOC-brand 5:4 LCD, this one's got greater color, with the difference that the black levels is slightly bumped upwards - Not considerable, in comparison to the ugly displays they sell now. This one has good viewing angles with minor distortions to color.

phew... Back to topic
The only patch / mods that I love to use
are the GL / DX9 renderers as you've mentioned. THese are cooler than the ones that came in the retail game, these restore things only the 3Dfx counterpart had, like Detail textures... Man those voodoo users had everything!!! I played with blurry textures for the rest of my life, only recently (relatively recently, but it was still too long ago, but in the 2000s? missed that fact completely)
And an additional plug here because I can be a huge nerd. I use DXWrapper, it handles and updates any DirectX related stuff, I updated DirectInput for instance, which gaves me more responsiveness (in cases outside this, the only way to gain responsiveness is to kick up the frame rate to triple digit levels to see any improvement. A fast PC will do)
I install any of that under UT V 436. Newer versions may have caught up on the DirectX stuff I mentioned, so better mouse aim potentially
I don't try newer patches until there's a fine reason / deal breaker
EvilGrins has already suffered with UTDM monsters not working properly... !
