For me, typing GG means that players had a good performance and made the match fun. In MH could mean that there was a team and a good sense of cooperation. Personally, I always type GG at the end of the match.

In DM could mean something different because there's no cooperation on that game type. For example, I only type GG at the end when the opponent or opponents were really good, no matter if I won or not.
I guess the meaning is really relative though to the type of player you are and your sportsmanship. The whole who does it first thing? i think that is just whoever can remember first, and whoever can type the fastest
Totally agree with Bigboss. It's impossible to determine why people type GG because that depends on each player personality and mood at that time. They could be honest or sarcastic, or maybe they just type it by costume, they don't even think if they should do it or not. As you said, for you "gg" is a congratulatory remark, but maybe it's not the same for them. If you really wanna know, you should ask them.

I think we all speak english here and the word "good' is a positive or desirable response when describing something.
But not all games are good games.
The problem is people throw out "gg" out of habit...it's just a reflex...not even an after thought.
Because we all have seen games that weren't good games but you see the phrase "gg" afterwards.
No one is congratulating anyone or being courteous. No thought is going into the "gg".
So why even say it? If you're going to speak then say what you really want to say.
Say something else like "that was fun", "you got lucky" or get the response I get when I win...silence.
Don't patronize winners with a nondescriptive response.
My thing is, if you're going to respond then mean what you say or don't say anything at all.
And don't be in a hurry to pick the next map...lol

So true MEAT, so true. Here's an example, me and a friend on a DM server, me winning the game, a low ping dude (grabbing invisibility the whole time) with a higher FPH at the 2nd place saying something like "lol what a newbie :(", my friend saying "GG" just for habit's sake and immediately after that two guys kickvoted her

So here's the lesson: don't use the "GG" expression like you were using a "LOL" or "HI" cause most people are cranky.

Besided that, why do I have to use the "GG" if a game sucks to me? Why can't I say "BG" (Bad Game) instead? They don't pay me to say "GG" 24/7. Sometimes silence is the best choice.

I always use it and I'm usually first. I use it for a close match, I use it to as a thank you for them staying long enough to play, I say it to recognize they are there. I say it to the bots if nobody is there. I just say it period. GG!

Oh don't get me wrong...I'll be the first one to say "gg" if I see a strategiclly played game.
And I do throw out the "good job" when someone kills me purposely.
But if someone sits in a map and fires at spawn points or loop and poop themselves
I don't think they deserve a "gg".
But from what I've seen "gg" is a generic term anyway.
So hey..."gg".

And anyone that comments on such... :?

Actually my fanatical somewhat excessively enthusiastic days are over.
But yes, I am guilty of encouraging when it comes to bringing life to unnecessary
and futile topics in hope of making conversation.
And I praise anyone, especially Hermskii, for the use of such a forum and
anyone that shows a passion for this ageless game and it's contents.
