I'm an idiot cuz I deleted it years ago

Post by EvilGrins » Sat Aug 20, 2011 7:33 pm

When I first started playing ut99 it was on someone else's computer. Long story made short, I was crashing there. After a bit he needed that computer, he had a few, for something else and most of what was there I lost.
:(
There's a deathmatch map that isn't very big, ideal for 10 or less players, that had a sort of optical illusion built in. I have no idea what it's called.

Description:
4 or 5 pads built around a central spire, empty space surrounds. The pads are all fairly big, gravity is kinda low but not as low as some. What's more, while the pads don't seem to be moving, the central spire is animated in such a way that it looks like the pads are constantry moving upwards.

Battle takes place around the spire, leaping from pad to pad while killing your enemies.
Note:
I could never remember where I got the map and I've never been able to find it on any mapping site. Not even Nali City when it was still up.

Hmmmm Sounds like a map fromDawns server but don't think there is an optical illusion in this one.

I have that map on my old PC. Too bad it's dead and I couldn't get it running again.
The map is called something like: DM-Lift Down.

I sent it to Hermskii years ago as a possible map for Curious George's Redeemer Insanity. I thought it might make an interesting change of pace for the server. But Herm didn't feel that it passed muster. I too have been totally unable to find it. I most likely got it at Nali City.

I also cannot find a map called DM-Redemption any more. But that may be because someone else later made a map with that exact same name. And the new version may have overwritten the original when it was uploaded onto Nali City, and elsewhere. The new version is a church. The old version I liked was just a big rectangular field surrounded by a wall. There were many shell holes to hide in, and some blown up buildings inside the walled area to hide in. There was also a tunnel that ran the length of the map, and two tunnels that divided the length into thirds, that ran across the width of the map. It was called redemption, because the only weapon you could find anywhere to pick up was a redeemer. And there was one in every shell hole, and lots more scattered about in the ruined buildings and in the tunnels. You could carry a maximum of two redeemers, so you had to keep moving.
It was my first introduction to a simulated redeemer arena of sorts. When I discovered CG I was already a bit familiar with what I needed to do to play the mod. Although playing in the small and enclosed maps that ran on CG meant a lot of learning.
I sent DM-Redemption to Herm as well, but it failed to make it onto the rotation too.

I don't recall these maps but I'll look and see if I have any of them.

Sounds promising. I'll hit the mapping sites and see what I can do with that.

Nope. I checked my stuff and have neither. If you know when you sent them to me I can find them. I have all of my email since about 1999 or 2000.

Ive looked thru my cache of Maps and cant find them either. The redemption map I have is the one with the church. I have one other with 3 jump pads in space that will turn anyone stomache called DM-5cubes-Inoxx very simple but can be a fragfest with multiple people. They are on my Battle Server.

If you really want to ressurect the old Redemption Id suggest taking the hard drive its on and have it recovered. Ive recovered files from many hard drives that were in dead computers or drives that have sustained file system damage.

HAHA! Another reason to NEVER throw anything away!

On Friday the 18th of March 2005 I sent Hermskii 5 maps for his consideration. I still have the email and the attachment archived in the email program. 3 of the maps made it onto the server, and the other two are the ones I was just talking about. :D

I recall now that Redemption wouldn't run on the server for some reason. And Herm just didn't like DM-Lift. So here they are, for anyone that wants to take a look at them. :)

Well poo, I couldn't find anything like that after an extensive search.

Well, not so amazing really. I found out the hard way a flaw in the map Redemption that I had forgotten about. Just as I was reliving the experience of playing this map and realizing how it had given me a good idea of redeemer blast area and how to survive a near miss by hiding behind a chunk of rock or a wall, I decided to tele up onto the wall surrounding the playing area. I guided a rocket up too high, and crashed the game so badly that it crashed my PC as well. Oooops! So this map is not ready for a server until that glitch is repaired. :?

However, I was very pleased to see that that huge improved texture set I put in my game dramatically improved the look of the windows in the central tower of DM-Lift. 8)

Ah yes, and I recall now that while DM-Lift never made it onto Herm's redeemer arena server, it was on his ordinary DM server that he used to run. I can remember playing other people on that map now. I think it might work well on the UT99 Chaos and Unreal Forever servers.

Even though i know the name of it now, I tried looking for it online anyway. Also cuz someone on ut99.org wants it...but no such luck. Although I did see a number of other forums come up requesting an update to DM-Lift for ut2004.

Thanks for finding those and sharing. I have them on Unimatrix01 BattleServer now if anyone wants to look at them. I had to rename Redemption to Redemption-Classic because of the other conflicting map named DM-Redemption

Here are the other 3 maps from that pack of 5 that I sent to Hermskii back in 2005.
I chose those 5 maps because I felt they all were interesting maps that were often hard to find even back then.

Forsaken is a large map that can play a bit slowly, but one that I've always liked.

Gravadyne-7 is an unusual concept map. There's a trap you can activate that dumps someone into outer space, but the victim can save himself if he's quick and figures out what to do.

Venus is a low gravity map where you fight on and amoung a lot of space junk platforms of different shapes and sizes.

You can preview them at Curious George's, if you wish. :)
