Even Keller may be impressed the next time he comes onto the UT2k4 server and tries to own me again. ;)
I look forward to it buddy :) my internet will be taking a big hit unfortunately if I get internet at all once we move next week.

Well the new modem is in, and working. My upload was ok, but I wasn't getting anywhere near the 20 Mbps download speed I should have been getting. I called tech support and it turns out I needed to remove my Linksys router from my internet connection and just use the modem. I'm getting the proper speeds now, but I've lost the hardware firewall a router provides.

It's a 9 year old router. Are there new ones available that will allow me to get good bandwidth and still be allowed to have two computers hooked into the router? It will be a hard wire connection for both. (I don't need or want wireless at this time anyway.)

Any wireless router that is around 30-40 bucks will be more than enough for your speeds, I think I have a Netgear Wireless-N WNR2000V2 at the moment. Wal-mart best bet just pick any router that has b/g and if you can afford it one that offers b/g/n.

What is b/g/n ? I googled the term, but it seems to refer only to wireless routers.

I want a hardwire router that can handle my internet connection. Or are all routers wireless capable, but still hard wire usable?

You see? I am a Luddite. Or a techno-Luddite, at any rate.

I'm also cheap. Can I get a firmware update for my Linksys 10/100 Router model BEFSR41-CA ver. 2 so that it can handle my 20 Mbps down and 1.5 Mbps up bandwidth? Or is it just a matter of changing settings in it?

Here is the breakdown

•Pros of 802.11b - lowest cost; signal range is good and not easily obstructed
•Cons of 802.11b - slowest maximum speed; home appliances may interfere on the unregulated frequency band

•Pros of 802.11g - fast maximum speed; signal range is good and not easily obstructed
•Cons of 802.11g - costs more than 802.11b; appliances may interfere on the unregulated signal frequency

•Pros of 802.11n - fastest maximum speed and best signal range; more resistant to signal interference from outside sources
•Cons of 802.11n - standard is not yet finalized; costs more than 802.11g; the use of multiple signals may greatly interfere with nearby 802.11b/g based networks.

ALL THE ROUTERS AT WALMART or other stores like it will BE Wireless routers, I have yet to see just a generic router maybe sold at bestbuty, (I have cisco routers but they are high end routers for businesses) will have it but for the money you will have a 4 port switch for multiple connections with these routers sold in stores, here is a cheap router at walmart

Hope this helps.

I would ask your provider what type of router you should use for max speed.

Hehe, I was just thinking this morning that all my ISP has really done is buy themselves another year before they get the axe. If they're smart they'll put off the inevitable from year to year. If they aren't, then they'll find out I was serious. :|

And speaking of cell phones; I just use mine as a phone, no texting or anything, so I just pay 10 bucks a month and 30 cents a minute. Perhaps you could consider something like that and save a bundle, if you can live without all the extras as you apparently are doing anyway. ;)

As usual you have cut through all the carp, and gotten straight to the point. Yes, I will do just that. Thanks m8 :)

Perhaps I should start a new thread called: "I have become a total hypocrite!".

1)While I came close, and I mean on the brink close, of walking away from the internet once and for all, events in real life forced me to reconsider. I had already told my ISP that if I didn't get satisfaction that I would walk away from them, and got the reply that basically said: "Well, go ahead then." So I did. I terminated the contract and was all set to return their modem in a couple of days. But that's when reality bit my @$$, so after reconsidering my options, I decided "better the devil I know" and signed on for another year.
In this I am at least partly a hypocrite, because it turns out that I am communicating strictly by phone and didn't absolutely need the email address after all.

2)Partly because of 1) I ended up buying a new 23.6" flat screen monitor when my old 20" CRT Trinitron finally died. In this I am a hypocrite because I love it.

3)The city of Toronto has signed on to an easy payment system for public transit users called "PRESTO!" which deducts a fare from your prepaid card. My town buses are already on this system. So is the entire GO Transit system of trains and buses that get you from city to city in Ontario. So it is now worth it to for me to sign on to the PRESTO system. You also get a nice discount for using PRESTO! too. When I travelled this week from Oakville to a destination in Hamilton Ontario via Oakville Transit, the GO system, and the Hamilton Street Railway bus, I used cash. If I had already had a PRESTO card I could have saved a few bucks. You not only get a discount for using PRESTO, but you also get a discount when you move from one transit authority to the next on your first fare in their territory.

I will be using the system again to get to the same place in a week or 10 days, and will save those bucks because I am now a PRESTO user. So I am also a hypocrite in this manner, because a true Luddite would use strictly cash in all transactions.

4)I still have my cell phone. I still use it only very rarely, and only as a phone. But I didn't get rid of it so I am still a hypocrite.

Let me say right here that I take NO comfort from the fact that others in here that at least partially agreed with me have upgraded to smart phones or this or that other modern convenience, as I have read that so many of you have done. I'm still a hypocrite, and not a Luddite. :(

So I have failed again, and probably will continue to do so. I have not followed through on my determination to be come a Luddite.
Oh well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....... :?

It's a crazy world and if these tools make life a bit easier then you can justify using them. You can still walk away from them anytime!

Ah yes, another chance to plead mea culpa.

Today I travelled again from Oakville to Hamilton on the GO Transit system. The 10:22 train I wanted to catch was exactly half an hour late. Delays of more than 15 minutes not due to circumstances beyond the transit authority's control make you eligible for a refund on your ticket price.

I have previously spoken about my new PRESTO! card and how much I like using it. I do love it. It's just so handy. And I can go just about anywhere in Ontario with it. And this is a large province, my friends. (And Hermskii probably thinks that Texas is large. ;) )

Anyway, after I got home again I checked the PRESTO! website and found how to make an online claim. I was even able to check to see if my claim was eligible for a refund. It was, and so I filled out the online form. My PRESTO! card will be credited for at least part of my outbound journey. Sweet! :D

So yes, I am NOT a Luddite. I'm certainly no techie, and have no interest in becoming part of the wired set, but a Luddite I am not. Am I a hypocrite? Ask me if I care. ;) :P

LOL Herm, I gotta draw the line somewhere. Perhaps in couple or more years when I can collect my Canada Pension Plan money (social security I think you call it) I could do that. Certainly the plans for those things are a little pricey just now. We get hosed on phone plans up here, especially compared to what US residents pay, so they tell us in the media.

But a phone I can also use as a camera and mp3 player and etc sounds interesting. But I know what would happen. After a month it would just gather dust while the plan fees would continue to keep going.

My phone replaced my camera.
It replaced my Garmin GPS.
It replaced my alarm clock.
It more easily allows me to get all of my email from all of my email accounts at the same time.
It replaced my in pocket flash drive.
It replaced my hang on the wall calendar.
It replaced my yellow pages.
It replaced my photo albums.
It replaced my old phone and about to allow me to discontinue my home phone.
It replaced my calculator.
It replaced a small flashlight.
It replaced my newspaper.
It replaced a deck of cards.
It replaced a portable radio.
It replaced all of my maps.
It replaced my pager.
It replaced my iPod.
It replaced my personal voice recorder.
It replaced my video recorder.
It replaced my walkie-talkie.
It replaced my need to watch news for weather or for news period.
It replaced my outside thermometer.
It replaced my address book.

It did all of that and I didn't even mention what all it brought to the table. To be able to cruise the internet at 4G is awesome!

Consider the cost again. My phone and my wife's phone for unlimited everything costs about $180.00 per month.
~Peace~
