Things You use, but then told you are using it wrong

I have been thinking about this topic for some time. Why? It has no real value but I am interested in people's experiences.

What I mean is that you use an item, maybe because you were raised up using the item a certain way, but then the manufacture says that you are using the item incorrectly or that it was not developed to be used that way and/or it is harmful if used that way.

My example is of Q-Tips.

Now I was raised in my family and we used Q-tips to clean out our ears from wax and dirt. I thought that everybody used them for this. I also know that it is used for make up, cleaning/polishing metal and etc... but the main reason would be for ear cleaning.

Now we are told NOT TO USE Q-TIPS (cotton swabs) TO CLEAN EARS... fooey.

I still use them today to clean when needed.

I train mice to use them as fighting staffs and hold little tournaments.

For me, that would be "straps" and springs, for bicyle and vehicles. I often hurt myself or make it too loose.
