I've seen.......it's very interesting.
I'm also looking into replacing my DSL with cable this week.
Last couple times I'd played, the game was a little sluggish.

Wow! You are serious!
People always say "Cable is a shared connection.", but really ALL connections are shared at one point or another. I find my cable is faster than DSL and constant. I can download files at 550kb per sec. Of course, it is expensive. But the years of 56k taught me that having an open phone is much better than a cheap connection.

Hey

Hey MEAT. Keep in mind that you mentioned that you thought there were too many people on the server quite often. Do you know off hand how many players you will allow on yours at the same time?

I wish there was mathematical equation that could figure out a ratio between players and map sizes.
But I'm thinking 6 players max. After 6 it seems to get a little crowded.
3 bots max for practicing...but if 2 or more players enter...out goes the bots.

Equation

Post by Hermskii » Tue Dec 20, 2005 10:07 pm

Unfortunately, the equation to use is your bandwidth pipe divided by players. Mine is 360 big (upload). I divide it by the number of players I want, say 12. 12 goes into 360 3 times. the real numbers are 36,000 divided by 12 = 3000. that is the number I'll use to restrict my players bandwidth with. By default, UT tries to give each player 20,000. That is crazy and would lag out a game with 3 players in it. I give my players about 4,000 each out of 36,000. I should only be able to support 9 players. What was your number up again? just put 2 more zeros on it and divide it by 4,000. That is how many players you should be able to support with them getting the same amount of lag as you get when you play on CG. So what is the final number for right now MEAT?

About the bots, there is a minimum player setting. Say you set it to 3. Then you join the match. 2 bots will then join the match in the next couple of seconds and you will be playing with a total of 3. Now another player joins so another bot must leave and you are at 3 players again. My point? if you ever want there to be a 1 on 1 match on your server to be, then your min player count must be 2.

619 Down
310 Up

1 on 1 would be the plan....plenty of other Redeemer sites to practice with bots.

31,000 divided by 4000 is 7.75 players at the same bandwidth as my server. You said that past 6 would be crowded so 31,000 divided by 6 = 5,166.66 Lets just round it down to 5,100 kbps per player. That is pretty good and it gives you 6 players with less lag than the CG server. More on this later!
