I watched today as the pings spiked up to 600-800 for everyone. At the time, CG had 10 players (full) and MHM had 6 players (almost full). I watched as everyone complained about the pings and lagg heplessly.
36,000 is my total upload bandwidth. 4,000 is the amount of bandwidth I dedicate to every player on CG and MHM. 36,000 divided by 4,000 is 9. Nine is the maximum amount of players that I am supposed to be able to support. That total number of nine includes players from both servers. To treat them more evenly, I can reduce the max player load to 5 on CG and 4 on MHM. That equals 9 which would mean that I could guarantee the quality of service for the players from my end.
That is not going to happen. I think 10 is good for CG. I may drop MHM down to 6 but that still equals a total of 16 total players that may connect to the servers at any time which is exactly how many were on today when all of the pings went through the roof.
I would consider blocking the 56kers as they produce more lagg and ping issues than anything else but I refuse to because many of them are favorites around here and this server is not better than 56kers especially those ones that made this server what it is. There is no easy answer here. Expect when CG by itself gets full especially when 56kers are in the mix that lagg and high pings are going to happen. At 10 players, the server is already maxed out bandwidth wise and there is still a whole other server running too in the same computer as CG and it has players on it too. Both CG and MHM run high packet mods. There is lots of information being sent back and forth between you and the server. That information when multiplied by the player load equals lagg.
I am pricing a business class cable connection and 1.5 up and 1.5 down ADSL options now in order to slam the ping and lagg issues once and for all. The cable is more expensive but I keep all of my email accounts and all of that if I go cable. Till then, please be patient and consider that if it gets too bad, people will leave soon enough and the pings will restore to normal. Later and sorry the ping/lagg issue is actually out of my hands currently.

Hey Nameless
I'll reply to that one on SRA forum too OK. We will already share the load when players go there. This high speed connection and it's cost would be only of my concern. I will never ask for money or anything. I may even find a way to get work to pay for it! I'm also in talks about splitting the cost and the bandwidth with my neighbor.

How bout this solution?
My humble opinion is to charge everyone with in a 50 mile radius of the server with cable modem, ADSL or T connection a 'ping surcharge' as these players suck the life from CG like a giant bandwidth vacuum. Well honestly this is not a real solution, but fun to imagine.
Science has proved that we are only 2% genetically different then chimpanzees, goes to show you 2% is a S**T load
