You have come along way...

Post by Hermskii » Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:00 am

You have come a long way MEAT. Now ask yourself: What would happen to the server if your PC crashed and burned right now? Do you have a back up? Would you or could you rebuild from memory? At least copy your UT Stuff folder which should include everything UT to a CD. Granted when you paste it back on to a new hard drive there will be more to do which you could ask me about but imagine the countless hours of work you'd save when in less than 30 minutes you could be back up again exactly as you are now. Just a thought that I had to learn this the hard way about 10 times before I learned to back up my servers. Later!

I have more than a dozen CD's full of UT stuff.
But it might be a better idea to throw all my info on some
type of memory card?

DVD

Post by Hermskii » Fri Feb 16, 2007 7:16 pm

A CD would actually not have a chance of holding your UT folder which as I said should have every single little thing you have UT related in it. WAIT. I'm wrong. My server is in it's own folder and all my collection of stuff is in another. So, you need to right click on the collection and see the properties for size. How big is it? How about the server? If both can add together to be less than 4.5 gigs than they can both be burned onto a DVD. A CD hold just over 700mb. A DVD holds just over 4700MB I think. Someone correct me here.

I don't think they make them that big yet to be honest.

Duel Layer DVD is about your best bet. Quite affordable at this point.

MEAT you meathead, you never told us how big your collection of stuff was and how big your server was.

Examples:

CG is exactly 1.8 gig big

and

HOH is exactly 1.05 gig big.

That said, I could back them both up on a single DVD easily but since I have a private network, I just back them up to my player PC about once a month over my network. Later!

Server is 1.65 GB
And my other stuff/crap/mods/skins/maps...etc is about twice that size.

30 min later
Duh....I forgot, my wife now has her own PC which has a DVD rewriter.
I'll just transfer all my stuff to DVD through her PC.
Man do I have smart friends.

Got a better idea...how about an External Hard Drive instead?
I actually have a nerd friend that thinks it's a better way to go.
