Hermskii Jr. went to the ER today...
In a big rush to get outside to play with the neighbor's kids today, little Hermskii Jr. (Age=6) managed to sever part of his move forward/move backword finger by running through and slamming the back door on his hand.
He screamed bloody murder and blood was everywhere. I told my wife to get him to the ER and she told me to find the missing part of his finger. I opened the back door and saw it fall to the ground. I grabbed it and stuck it in a ziplock with ice and water and went to the ER.
They could not or would not re-attach it since is was all basically skin. Turns out he lost about 3/4 of the tip of his middle left finger on his left hand. Right where the nail bed starts and up is gone now. He took it like a real man and really enjoyed the Codine flavor Tylenol they gave him. He actually got to the point of laughing and everything. My son is very funny when he is wasted. This was the first real injury we have ever had with our children. He is going to be fine but what an awful feeling to see my son looking at his mutilated finger as blood just drizzled out everywhere. He was in total shock I think. So was I. Thank you Lord that it was not worse!

Oh Poor Little guy! I hope he gets to feeling better soon. No fun to have a busted up finger like that.

Wow. I am sorry Herm. I know that no parent wants to see their kid(s) in pain or hurt. I am sure that Jr will be good. Kid's especially that age are resilient. I hope your wife will be OK, being traumatized that way. I mean this happened to her "baby". So I think she will have a more difficult time with it than Jr. After the finger heals, Jr will be the same.
I am glad that Jr was not injured more than what happened.
The statement of "My son is very funny when he is wasted" is funny. Take care.

I think I would have passed out if I saw it happen.

Very glad he is okay though.

Sorry to hear this and I hope he doesn't go the way I went with this sort of stuff. LOL
I have been sliced, blown up, caught in machinery and cut open an awful lot in my life LOL.
I feel like a stuffed animal with all my stitches.
A speedy recovery is in my prayers for your son Hermskii!

Re: Hermskii Jr. went to the ER today...
Non-adhesive dressing my rear! LOL. I had to change it tonight for him. He wouldn't let me near it. His Mom was at school. Just Hermskii vs. Hermskii Jr. and I already knew what the outcome HAD to be.
We took off the dressing together and sure enough the last 2 layers down were integrated with the scabbing and other oozing juices. He and I were equally stressed in that he knew it was going to hurt when I took it off and I knew I'd hurt him when I took it off. I made him soak it but any touch to it hurt him badly. I put him at the kitchen table and told him to soak it in the bowl of water I provided him. I went to call all of the doctors and nurses in my family to find out how to get this gauze off him as painlessly as possible. Hit finger was just a big red scab with gauze sticking out everywhere and his scab was above the gauze now and hard.
While I spoke with everyone, he fell asleep at the table. I snuck in, put his hand in the water and hoped he didn't relieve himself right then. He did not. I slowly and quietly cut all the extra stuff away. Then with some tweezers, I carefully separated the top layer from the layer directly on the wound. The top layer finally came off after about 10 minutes of gently tugging at it from every direction. The final layer came off with the same amount of effort. I dried his injury and re-wrapped it up with this "non-adhesive" gauze then wrapped it with the regular dry white kind and lastly put the finger splint back on. Right then he woke up and told me not to touch it because it would hurt. I told him I was already done. He looked down and saw it all nice and clean with no blood now and no pain. He was happy. I was happy and I put him to bed! Hermskii and Hermskii Jr. lived happily ever after. The end!

Re: Hermskii Jr. went to the ER today...
Thanks POTS. This dressing change thing is going to be with us for a few more weeks. Last night was his Mom's turn to try to talk him into letting her change it. She failed as I did and had to wait till he fell asleep. She did everything just as I did and it worked out well. I figure about 1 more week of having to wait for him to go to sleep first. After that, the injury might have healed enough to stop bleeding and oozing stuff into the gauze making it hard to change out. During his awake hours he still plays and everything. It is like nothing is wrong so we are already beginning to get past this. Thanks again POTS for the well wishes. I appreciate it!

Yow, I'm sorry to hear this news Herm, but glad that the little guy is taking it so well in stride.
Pretty soon he'll be showing off his scar and claiming bragging rights I'm sure.

Oh my god!! Man oh man he must have really slammed the door hard!
I know a finger tip might not seem to be like losing a leg or something Herm, but losing any part of your body is pretty devastating.
I know he's taking things well, but there was a loss and he's going to deal with it in someway.
Poor lil dude. I feel bad for him. What a terrible thing to happen.
