Feeling Your Age/Mileage

Post by David » Mon Aug 29, 2011 7:33 pm

I thought about posting this some time ago but I never did. I did make the comment to a co-worker and they looked at me odd.

I am noticing some things as I age.

First one is that I do not eat candy as I used to because the weight does not come off as easy as it used to. So one day I opened the fridge and about eye level in the "butter tray" was a big bag of M&M candy (plain) sitting there just taunting me. I felt as though I was ogling those M&Ms as I did with other items when I was younger when there was a topless scene during Nightmare on Elm Street. Is this bad?

Second, I used to be really physical. I lifted weights, I played basket ball for 5 hours after work in the Phoenix heat around +110 degrees. I enjoyed biking, playing football, just goofing around and sometimes fighting. I try to stay in shape even now, for myself and for my job. The one thing I never cared for is running. I hate running. Anyway the story continues………. Today I went to cut some firewood. I found some oak trees that were dead so I cut them. I then had to carry the larger pieces of one tree down a hill, through a dry but rocky (loose rocks) river bed, over down trees in the river bed, then up the hill, and then place them into the bed of the pickup truck. Either those pieces were HEAVY or I am getting old. After carrying two large pieces, I had to rest and then go and get two more, then rest. I could hear and feel my heart pounding. I rolled both ankles on the loose rocks but thank goodness for work boots with ankle support. I got all the pieces loaded up and I took them home. There I unloaded it, which was not that big of a deal since I could park next to the stacked wood and drop the large pieces near the wood pile. I am glad that this was my last wood trip for this year.

P.S. It was around the high 90's with humidity. The smaller logs were no issues, but I need to start paying someone to get the firewood for me :D

Don't forget that Oak is a very dense type of wood, and therefore heavy. I recall hefting some oak flooring boards, and then some pine boards, and some of other wood types. The oak was really heavy compared to the other kinds.

But otherwise yes, you will gradually feel the aging process sneaking up on you. Especially when you go to do something you haven't done in a few years, and when you try your body says: Hey! what are you trying to do to me?

Tell me about it! LOL. My big issue these days is keeping cool period. Even in AC I can get to sweating like a pig when I do any work at all. During the weekends I don't care and work like a dog all day outside usually. It makes me mad to be sweating at work in nice clothes in front of people. I totally blame the smoking for this but consider this too. I went to a public pool the other day and swam for the first time all year. It is a big pool being at least as big as one of those Olympic pools with all of the racing lanes in it. This one has lap lanes in it as well.

I told my wife when I was younger I could swim the entire length of the pool underwater. She laughed saying yeah right and that I always said I could do stuff when I was young etc etc. The lifeguard heard my claim as well and also mentioned that he doubted me.

I went to the end and gave it a shot. I did not make it. I did however make it about 80% of the way before I came up for air. The lifeguard was clapping and was way impressed saying he couldn't even have swam that far. I don't know if anyone knows the measurements or markings in one of these big pools but I started in the shallow end and made it to a read line the runs the width of the pool. It was at least 50 - 60 yards I think.

WEED! LOL.

No. No dope here but that did make me laugh. They are about to close the pool this year already. I told my wife I'd do it next year and film it too! Maybe I'll get to put it up on youtube for you folks!

Hmmm it seems that my age is showing yet again. At one time "weed" could mean tobacco, at least around my way it did. I think. Maybe my memory is going too!

So anyway, I wasn't talking about wacky tobaccy, but if it gave you a laugh that's fine.

I notice you didn't say anything about quitting. *ahem* :?

I used Chantex (spelling?)
I never thought I could quit, but this was given to me free of charge (samples) from my doctor - too 1.5 weeks.
I noticed after 1 1/2 weeks that i hadn't wanted to smoke, and also I started to forget taking the Chantex.
So, I stopped smoking and stopped using the Chantex entirely and never looked back! :P
Same thing for one of my sons-in-law.

Chantix has worked the best so far but didn't work in the end. I have used it twice. I am very much looking at trying again folks so pray for me is all I can say.

About, 4 or 5 years ago I quit - after smoking since I was very young.
Best thing I ever did.
Even helps my UT game.

In the "END" - it all boils down to your attitude - you MUST set your mind up to do so and put in some good reasons why you want to quit and stay FOCUSSED on those reasons all the time!!!
For example, one of my reasons was that I hate to go out in the middle of the night when it is 20 deg. F. below zero a freeze my B off.
Another example was I hate to go to the store and pay the money for them, especially late at night when I am out - no more doing that if I quit.
I also kept in mind the stench of an ash tray stuck in my face!!! (a good one)

I will pray for your will to quit!
