Email migration

Post by David » Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:12 am

Well....I tried to leave things alone concerning my email. Through my provider I have some email accounts. I use Outlook Express at home and at work to view these emails. I do not log onto the email website to view or send email. I like the easy access of email of Outlook Express and having that open all time so I can see when I get email.

Well yesterday, I got my final notice that my provider has told us that we needed to migrate to the new email setup, using gmail. I would have the same email address but it is on a different server (gmail) and they boost you get more storage. I don't need more storage. I like what I have. I knew about this change, but really wanted to wait for the last minute because I did not like the idea.

I switched it over, still using Outlook Express and now I have new folders (imap). I DON"T LIKE IT. I even told the tech who assisted me with some settings, that I felt it was stupid to force people to switch when they were happy with what they got. Now you no longer have happy people but unhappy people.

I want to understand this way of email more, but I know others who have been on it longer than I and they hate it as well.

The more I read about people having issues with gmail using outlook or outlook express and even just using the web server for their email......it leads me to a very frustrating sentence that is the following..

GMAIL ....

I can't even type it or find pictures to describe it......I can tell you, it is not positive....

I don't use Gmail myself but as an IT guy I can understand why the switch over to gmail. Its accessible from anywhere, using google's search you can find archived mail easily.. and in the event your computer crashes.. your email is still available. Plus it saves money not having to maintain a mail server. For companies.. everyone can share a common contact list via Imap plus have your own list. There are many benefits to using Gmail. I think youll get used to it over time.

Yeah and Microsoft discontinued Outlook Express a long time ago. Gmail does have many advantages but I still prefer to use Outlook. Outlook rules! You have to make copies of your PST every once in a while though to be safe from HDD crashes.

Sure you can. You can have as many profiles as you like. You can tell it which to start with or to give you a list of profiles to choose from. I have it set to offer my real profile first always which is my James profile. It also shows my Hermskii profile. I click on one or the other and I see that profile's email right then! It is awesome.

I thought about making another post, but I will this one.

What is a good email provider that you use, that can be accessed with outlook or outlook express?

I originally went with mail.com because they used to have a wide range of extension options after the @. For example my current email is like this: @mad.scientist.com

Even though they eliminated the massive list of extension options, used to be about 70 or so, it's still a semi-decent mail provider.

My host plan has given me 1000 Email accounts.... what am I gonna do with 1000???? According to my host plan (which is a business plan) I can do as I please with the 1000 email boxes and that includes assigning them to anyone that can use it. If you dont mind the unimatrix01.com domain name you are more than welcome to an account or two. I can activate it for you and you would have full control over the account. Password change, spam control...etc etc... You can access it directly via web page or use any pop/smtp email client. Let me know if interested. You can use any account name you like... david@unimatrix01.com ... utrocks@unimatrix01.com.....anything! For Free, wont cost you a dime.

First off, I wish to say thank you to Sir Mandrake for your offer. That was very good of you to offer.

I spent around an hour on tech support yesterday and another hour today concerning this email........

After going through settings and voicing my displeasure with the change, I am accepting the fact I can not change what is going to happen with or without my approval. It is done. I must move on from this point.

After figuring some things out, the email issue will be ok for work. I had to make folders in the imap folders so I can store emails where they are supposed to be and that will synch with the email server and any other computers I access my email through outlook or outlook express and I will not loose emails (as long I I use the newly created sub folders in the imap folders). I can deal with this. Concerning my home/personal email, my wife and I will figure out a way to handle it I guess.

I personally haven't tested a GMail account yet, and I don't understand why gmail accounts have become so popular lately...
I'm however not a big fan of Google-related products (check their new privacy policy, as well as their Google Update spyware you cannot uninstall from your PC).

I also don't like the Web interface of the mail-box offered by my ISP, but I can use Windows Live Mail to access that locally.

As for webmail providers, I don't mind using hotmail/WL, since they've improved the interface lately, and is accessible even from a smartphone.
Just be sure you're using a not too short name, as well as a private profile, otherwise you might get spam-mails and cambots invitations...
