Near miss?!?

Post by a nameless entity » Fri Feb 15, 2013 10:30 am

The huge asteroid that's supposed to miss us by 25-28,000 km is due to go by around 2:30 pm EST. As you've probably heard by now, a different piece of rock hit Russia this morning.

In astronomical terms, 28,000 km is a very near miss. Put that into human terms and it's like being shot at, with the bullet passing through your hat and parting your hair in a new way. :o

And suprisingly nobody warned nothing about this danger. So End of World won't be announced as some noise makers made sounds useless.

All news exploded suddenly AFTER event, not BEFORE.

We are too many on this planet, isn't it ?

1) Actually this asteroid has been in the news for over a week. Now, I may listen to the news more than most, my alarm clock is set to a news station, but it's not like this was a big shock.

Although, the meteor that nailed Russia? That wasn't in the news until after everybody had seen it streak across the sky.

2) Dunno about that 28,000 figure. I heard it was more like 17,000. They made a point of comparing distance with the satellites a lot of us get cellphone services from , which are around 22,000 miles out.

Yeah, you guys are only 13 years late on switching over to metric. So who's counting anyway?

I hated the metric system as a kid but now I know we should have converted everything over. It is actually so much easier than our standard system.

The domestic auto industry is or has converted over to metric. I know they were gradually introducing metric way back. My '88 Mustang is mostly SAE, but some stuff is metric and the oil drain bolt on my parent's '87 T-bird was 13mm. Since then a lot more stuff, if not all, has probably become metric. (Sure wish I could afford a new car to find out!)

The trend will continue country wide, but it will take years and years more without a little nudging by Washington. ;)
