"S3TC High Resolution Textures Revisited AGAIN!"

Post by Hermskii » Tue Sep 09, 2008 12:30 am

Hey folks. I've been ranting on about the possible use of these optional textures for years now. In the beginning, I was unable to get them to work at all or when they worked I had a sliding frozen bot issue which made the bots not animate so they moved like a statue sliding around rather than actually running.

Most people gave up on this effort years ago as I did. I went back after it about a year or so ago to find a way to make them work. These are textures that came on the 2nd CD that came in the retail pack of UT when it was first sold. It turned out that even Epic messed up making several of them so out of all of them, only a few worked properly and only if you managed to install them correctly and reconfigure your video card and video renderer in the game properly.

After days of testing and retesting I finally got a functional set of instructions built that worked perfectly. Then several months later a guy named DieHard contacted me here on this forum asking for help. He was hell-bent on remaking all of the S3TC textures. Yes, all of them! It took him forever but he finally did it and applied most of my instruction set for installing them to his process.

The results are pretty freaking great. Imagine 3mb textures now being 30mb large. They actually don't slow down your sytem at all. Most maps use many of the textures which have been updated so depending on how many of the textures a map uses that are offered in S3TC format will determine how much better that map can look. I have taken several screenies tonight of maps where I know certain textures have been replaced. start up your game and see what the default textures look like compared to these! Here they are:

Image
This is the grass in DM-Ariza][

Image
The moon in DM-Phobos

Image
A distant galaxy in DM-Phobos or maybe just some space gases.

Image
Looking down on DM-Phobos with the space-anomaly in the background.

Image
Now DM-Phobos with the moon in the background.

Image
Earth from DM-Inoxx

Image
Another shot from DM-Inoxx

Image
A shot of the Americas from DM-Inoxx

So you can see there is a big difference. DM-Deck16][ and DM-Conveyer both have significant changes in them and you should see the floors in the majority of default DM-maps. Stone, wood, boxes and especially the floors are all redone. There are patterns now on walls where they used to be blank grey squares. It like somebody pimped my game!

These textures work in practice sessions and online. They are NEVER-EVER to be used on a server. They are CLIENT-SIDE only. That means they are just for you but you can play online or in private with them.

I intend on pushing this to the point that I will be adding another page to my website dedicated only to this. I worked hard on it just to get other people's work to actually work. Now it works and works awesomely! I suggest that each of you wait until I write up another fail-safe set of instructions to use these textures and then give it a try. You won't regret it. They are awesome!

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that smoke, flame and most decals like blood and gun shots look much better and when you actually shoot peeps the blood looks a little like it sprays out instead of globs out. Maybe it's just my super bad-azz video card doing that much. It is a BFG Geforce 7800 GS OC AGP video card with 256mb of DDR3. I don't think it is the card though. I think it is the txtures! I know the decals are the textures for sure.

The gliding player glitch has been fixed for a long time now with the patch.
. . . but there is still the gamma problem for some cards.

Last time i installed the SC3 and tweaked it out for best results , I ended up with my game brightness all the way up and still the maps where almost to dark to play some of them. It was very frustrating.

It would be super to have a section dedicated just to this topic because it is not only a UT thing , we will also learn about cards and settings. Maybe i will try the textures again if we can find the solution to the gamma issue.

The difference the textures make are striking!

I always use those textures and they really do add a lot to the game.

With my new card and its drivers I once again have darkness issues, and for some reason the card's driver console overrides the gamma function in the game, making F11 useless. I have to minimize the game and open the console to make adjustments. But then sometimes the game "remembers" my settings, and I'm good for a few sessions before I have to readjust again.

I don't think I get your level of sharpness on the planet or moon though. I must now fire up the game and go check.

Ok, on Phobos I get slightly better rez on the building surfaces perhaps, but the rendering of the moon and gas cloud is much softer, although the colours are the same.
I'm a man........but I can change........if I have to........I guess

Great phrase MEAT! But really, just wait and see after I attach instructions for how to do this stuff. You'll love it. Yes, there is more blood too.

When you guys get this down to an easy science, then maybe I'll try it Again!
This MAY be the best upgrade UT can or will have if all the kinks are worked out of it! :P

All the kinks are mostly worked out depending on what graphics card you have. Some have to be tweaked others don't.

Being the best upgrade?

Some new mods are in the works that will blow everything you have seen thus far out of the water. It has been a while they might be coming closer to a release date soon.
New SC3 Texture pack with reworked and additional tex is one that comes to mind.

K, this is the new texture pack from Diehard. It isn't going to get much better than this. Some of these textures or at least one is 130mb big by itself. Most default UT textures are less than 2mb in size. These are all around 30mb average size I'd guess.

I have a patch for that brite screen or dark screen problem you have. Send me an email and I'll reply with it in tow.

yea I got these upgraded textures as well and they look great ! but, some servers you end getting the "skating players " effect . which sux ! I ended up just having two texture files in my UT folder and just renaming them as needed, the GOTY standard textures and D3D8 render for online play and then the diehard textures w/ openGL for offline play or! for those servers that are compatable in that they have the GOTY textures for server use. Either way I'm getting 200 fps  WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

Chef

it's all explained here - > http://www.ut99.org/2008/04/19/tweak-yo ... e-maximum/

Chef the s3 textures are 100% compatible on all servers.
You need to run the patch to get rid of the skating player problem.

Herm i ran one patch on them after installing and i still had brightness prob.
Are you speaking of a different patch ? The one i used fixed the skating player prob but not the brightness/gamma .

Hmm I know that you can run that patch with the GOTY 2nd disc textures, but I 'm not sure about the Diehard ones? I don't think you do run that patch for those? :?

Chef

With either set up I've never had any problems with any server here from you guys , just from our clan server atm.

the diehard ones are just higher resolution then it won't mater. The coding is what the patch fixes.

Ive tryed it and it seems to work ive also enable aload of stuff from that tweaks guide like anti aliasing and hacks etc looks much better now. NaliPrison works with S3TC lol it looks much more vibrant :D

Image

and K are u still havin the brightness problem in OpenGL?
cos i know the fix, on advanced settings/rendering/opengl there should be somthing like gamma correction or gamma fix somthing like that, set that to true and its fixed :D worked for me anyway
